Field Craft is regularly practiced and includes the teaching of how to use a compass and map reading as well as skills needed in the field. Exercises are often held to practice these skills. We are fortunate in having access to acres of land at RAF Portreath and cadets take part in bridge building, river crossing, obstacle courses and night exercises.
The Squadron has undertaken several walking expeditions, such as the 36 mile trek along the Smugglers Way from Boscastle to Looe Beach and the area around Pen y Fan, the highest point in the Brecon Beacons. Ten Tors is a course set over Dartmoor completed over a weekend in May during which you have to visit ten hills known as Tors. There are three distances depending on age, 35km, 45km and 55km. Such is the terrain that it is necessary to start training in February to ensure that the selected teams are competent and able to succeed. There are several training weekends, which include an RAF Weekend.
It is possible for cadets to work towards BELA & CSLA Awards (Basic Expedition Leadership Award and the Community Sports Leadership Awards)
